Carseat Sleeping

I'll keep this short and sweet because Emma is screaming in her bassinet and I need to go get her up from her nap.

I was told yesterday at my new moms group that babies sleeping in carseats has been linked to SIDS. Something about a decrease in oxygen. Oh dear. Carseat sleeping has been getting us about 5 hour glorious stretches of sleep at night. And Emma hates lying flat on her back in her bassinet. Oh, and by the way, apparently wedges for cribs have also been linked to SIDS. We just can't win.

Hence why Emma is screaming in her bassinet right now. Sigh...

Blogging slacker

Sorry for being such a blogging slacker recently. I have kept up on everyone else's blogs but haven't gotten around to putting up a new post myself. Guess there hasn't been much exciting to write about. Well here's what's going on in my life...

1) Today was hubby's first day back at work. Yes, we were lucky and got him at home for a full month. But now reality sets in. I am now a stay at home mom without a helper. Today went pretty well...what will tomorrow hold?

2) I attended a new moms group today that the hospital puts on. It is run by a nurse and there were probably 15 women there with kids ranging from Emma (the youngest at 4 weeks) to about 9 months. It seems like a great place to get questioned answered and to vent about frustrations and difficulties. I plan to go each Monday.

3) I have 2 products that I really like so far and would recommend. First, we use the Miracle Blanket everynight with Emma. It is the best swaddler I've found - Emma can't get out of it. I am also digging my Sleepy Wrap, especially now that I don't have a helper to hand Emma off to. It is pretty easy to put on (seemed intimidating at first) and Emma seems very comfortable and falls asleep easily in it. She's sleeping in it right now as I type!

4) I've just started pumping to try to get some milk for our freezer for future use. I am pumping in between sessions and only getting about 1.5-2 ounces. That isn't even one full bottle. The nurse at the moms group today say that is typical. Wish I could get a full bottle with each session. Gonna take a long time to stock up the freezer!

5) Emma will not sleep in her bassinet. She hates laying flat on her back. We bought a sleep wedge but that still doesn't prop her up enough. Initially, she was sleeping on my chest at night. Now we've got her sleeping in her carseat (though often I have to get her to fall asleep first on top of me). I'm sure experts would scold me...but, hey, she sleeps. And that's what matters to me! We've even gotten her to do 5-6 hours straight on a few nights.

So, that's about it. Emma turns one month tomorrow. Wow! In honor of her one month birthday, here's a cute new picture...

Newborn Photo Shoot

Hubby's dad got us an awesome gift to welcome Emma...a "Baby's First Year" package with a fantastic local photographer who specializes in baby photography. I cannot recommend her enough to anyone in the D.C. area looking for a photographer - Virginia Payne Photography. The package includes a sitting as a newborn, and then at 4, 8 and 12 months.

Last week we went in for the newborn session and three-and-a-half hours later we emerged. Emma wasn't completely cooperative but what can you expect from a two week old? The photographer likes to take mostly asleep pictures of babies, and, of course, Emma was wide awake and alert almost the whole time. But I think she still captured some great pictures and we cannot wait until we get the link for the full gallery.

The photographer updated her blog yesterday with some pictures of Emma...I've put them below as well. I think she's pretty darn cute!

Miss Emma at two weeks

Tomorrow Emma will be two weeks old. Wow, time has flown especially when you are on maternity leave and aren't really keeping track of what day of the week it is.

Things are going pretty well. Emma hates to sleep flat on her back in her bassinet - she gets super wheezy and fussy after just a few minutes. Yesterday, I bought an inclined wedge sleep positioner and hope that will help. I end up holding her in bed most of the night, a habit I don't really want to get used to. But it is the best way to get a decent stretch of sleep. She sleeps tons during the day and we just need to figure out how to get rid of that nasty day/night confusion.

She is also feeding really well. A week ago, she was 5lb 15 oz. Today, a week later, she was almost to 6lb 8oz. Guess the nonstop feeding is working. I'm pretty much feeding on demand day and night and let's just say that the demand is very high.

We've gotten out of the house a few times, other than just going to the pediatrician. Emma had her first dinner out at the classy IHOP by our house (yum, pancakes!). We've also gone for a few short walks around the neighborhood and to pick up lunch for daddy and me. And yesterday Emma had a newborn photo shoot. My father-in-law got us a terrific photography package with a great local photographer. It includes sittings at newborn, 4 months, 8 months and 1 year. We ended up being there for 3 1/2 hours yesterday and Emma about had it by the end. I can't wait to get the pictures.

So that's pretty much the quick update for now. I'll post a few pictures below. Hope everyone has a nice Easter weekend. Emma and I hope to get out, take a walk and enjoy the fabulous Spring weather!
